What is a Near-Earth Asteroid?

Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) are asteroids and comets whose orbits bring them within 1.3 AU of the Sun โ€” close enough to potentially intersect with Earth's orbit. NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) tracks over 35,000 known NEOs and updates the data daily.

The vast majority pose no threat. Our Risk Index (0โ€“100) combines Earth MOID, size, velocity, and NASA's official PHA designation to give each object a score. Most objects score below 30.
